Teachers Strive to Teach Better in Winchester MA
Monday, August 25, 2008
More than 50 Winchester teachers will return to school with better skills this year thanks to a grant from Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence (WFEE). The grant allowed for elementary teachers from across the entire district to take part in a special program that instructed teachers on better methods for teaching writing to their students. Learning to write is an important part of any student’s career and learning this skill correctly is even more important. Students should learn to write in a clear, organized and compelling way and Winchester teachers are committed to their students mastering this skill.
The writing program is based on the Empowering Writers curriculum and the new strategies will be implemented at all of Winchester’s elementary schools this fall. Another helpful tool used during the workshop to assist teachers of the youngest grades was the Lucy Calkins Writing Program. A presenter from Columbia University’s Lucy Calkins Writing Program in New York did a training which focused on getting students to write every day, drawing on their own lives for inspiration.
Winchester teachers are returning to school this Fall with more knowledge, dedicated to helping their students learn in the best way they can. It is no wonder that education in Winchester MA is some of the best in the state. Education is a priority amongst its teachers in Winchester.
